Citizenship Washington Focus

During a normal 4-H year, without COVID-19 concerns, Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is a week-long 4-H citizenship program for youth ages 14–19 that typically takes place at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Washington, D.C. Through the support of Colorado 4-H, more than 3,800 4-H members have participated in the National 4-H Citizenship Washington Focus program in Washington, D.C. over the past 45 years. CWF provides opportunities for members to develop their leadership skills, learn about civic engagement, get a behind-the-scenes look at our nation’s capital, hear from engaging speakers, and complete hands-on work like drafting a legislative bill.

This year the conference will be a virtual, once-a-week program that will begin on June 20. These workshops will run every Monday for five weeks (June 21, June 28, July 5, July 12, and July 19). Each session will last 2–2.5 hours, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Delegates must be at least 15-years-old by January 1 of the current year and currently involved in an Extension-sponsored 4-H youth program.
  • Delegates must have at least one year of leadership experience and be currently active in a leadership position in the organization she/he represents.
  • Delegates must have demonstrated an active interest in citizenship/community service programs in their club and/or at the county level.
  • Delegates must complete an official application for Citizenship Washington Focus and upload a clear, glossy picture for publicity.
  • Delegates must be willing and have the time to work with their county/area Extension agent to conduct a citizenship program upon return, based on a prearranged agreement.

Colorado 4-H will assist in sponsoring one youth per county for the full amount of the registration. Additional delegates will be allowed but the cost is the responsibility of the County/4-H Member. The cost for this year’s virtual conference is $250 per delegate.

Eligible members can apply using the 2021 CWF Application through the 4HOnline event registration section.  Signing the acceptance form obligates the individual to participate in the full CWF program from start to finish. A CWF orientation will be held in early June.
