October 2022 Meeting Minutes

The High Country Handiworkers meeting was called to order at 7:07 p.m. on October 10, 2022 by President Josh Ryan at the McKee Building at The Ranch.

The pledges were led by Levi Shrout, Elizabeth Shrout, Lucy Shrout, Victoria Freeland, and Charlie Gilmore.

New roll call procedure: Please take your nametag from the alphabetized file box at the start of the meeting, when you grab your agenda and Parli Pro book. Then at the end of the meeting, drop the name tags in the buckets at the exits of the room. This will be more effective for roll calls, saving time going through the entire list of members.

Walker Cameron moved to approve the minutes from July as posted on the club website. The motion was seconded and APPROVED.

Treasurer Trinity Dunham presented the treasurer report. In the checking account we have $1,074.16, in the savings account we have $5,590.33, and the CD has $2,064.64.

The club meeting report was submitted to the local papers by the club reporter, Morgan Copeland.

Avery Kemper, Kinzie Copeland, and Victoria Freeland led the sunshine report for the August, September, and October birthdays.

Lacey Adams, the Cloverbud leader, presented the Cloverbud report. In July, the Cloverbuds made their Fair project: Eagles.

Leader’s Report: 

Exchange Club – Representatives visited to talked about the Exchange Club. Members who are 13 years old or older are invited to join. The Exchange Club partners with a club in another state to host one year and travel the next, so the members have a two-year commitment. There will be a Silent Auction and Dinner to raise money for the club on February 4.

Extension Agent – Katie Daywalker submitted her resignation and is no longer an extension agent for the county. Contact Pam Heeney or Bailey Schilling at the extension office with any questions about projects.

Clover Connection – The Clover Connection is the monthly newsletter. Once families have enrolled they are added to the email list. The newsletter includes important dates, workshop info, and general info.

Calendar – Make note of dates from the calendar so you can plan around your project’s important events.

Club Website (hch4h.org) – Our club website is a great place to find information and the calendar.

McKee Building Calendar – The schedule for the McKee Building is in the binder at the front of the building. You can find times and assigned rooms for meetings.

Junior Leadership Club – Junior Leadership is open to 13-year-olds and older and scholarships are available for the kids. Also, the club offers project scholarships to any members who need funds for their projects. The application was available at the meeting and online.

Visual Arts – Karley Rivera is a leader for Visual Arts and will be hosting meetings on Mondays before club meetings for anyone in the project or interested in learning more.

Beekeeping – Jenelle Kemper, the leader, spoke about having fun field trips and hand-on activities for the members of the project this year.

Photography – Jenelle Kemper is also the leader of Photography. There will be fewer hands-on workshops this year because attendance was low last year. It’s an intensive project, so reach out and ask questions before enrolling.

Foods – Project meetings will be held at the McKee Building on the first Monday of each month hosted by Amy Gebhardt.

There was no Parli Pro report, but grab the books at the front table at future meetings.

Old Business:

Dairy Bar Recap – Members had fun volunteering in the dairy bar at the fair. We will plan to help again next year.

Thank You Notes – Please send thank you notes to your sponsor for any special awards you received this year.

Club Completion (By-Laws and Budget) – By-laws were updated to be in compliance with the USDA and NIFA. Cindy read the changes out loud. Trinity Dunham moved to accept the changes. Seconded and APPROVED. Treasurer Trinity Dunham outlined the budget for the year on the marker board for members to see. Walker Cameron moved to accept the budget. Seconded and APPROVED.

Open House – Paisley and Kora Dennis, Gideon and Genesis Rivera, and Avery and Lacey Kemper helped with our club table at the Open House on October 6.

New Business:

Enrollment – Enrollment opens on October 16, 2022 and closes February 1, 2023 for returning members and March 15, 2023 for new members.

Cloverbud Meetings – Cloverbud meetings will move to the McKee Building on the third Monday of each month.

Turning Pens for the Troops – This is a community service opportunity at Woodcraft on November 6 from 11:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Members can use a lathe to create a writing pen from wood to be sent to those serving in the military.

Larimer County 4-H Achievement Night – The achievement night for livestock and county awards is on Friday, November 4 at 6:30 p.m.

Club Achievement Night – At our November meeting, we’ll have our club achievement night. Bring your awards from county and state to share. Cindy asked members whose projects went to the state fair to stand and be recognized. She then asked members who shot at the state shoot to stand and be recognized as well.

Shooting Sports Ambassadors – Senior shooting sports members can apply to be state ambassadors. Currently our county has two ambassadors: Nate Rogers and Jessica Laffey. Applications are on the Colorado 4-H website and are due by October 15.

Foundation Craft and Vendor Show – The Larimer County Foundation is hosting a craft show on October 28–30 at the McKee Building. Members get a discounted rate for booth space.

  • Willow Cameron: making a bullet board for .22 rifle.

July 2022 Meeting Minutes

The High Country Handiworkers meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. on July 11, 2022 by President Josh Ryan at the McKee Building at The Ranch.

The pledges were led by all members who volunteered.

Members went outside to hear a demonstration from Abigail, Chloe, Grace, Hannah, and Jethro Jones about goats.

Roll call was taken by club leader Cindy Buckardt.

Josh Ryan asked for a motion to approve the secretary’s report as posted on the club website. Maddi Jessen pointed out a misspelling in her name under Demonstrations, and Gideon Rivera found an error in the parade date. Maddi Jessen moved to approve the secretary’s report from June with the revisions. The motion was seconded and APPROVED.

Treasurer Trinity Dunham presented the treasurer report. In the checking account, we have $1,478.24, in the savings account we have $5,589.62, and the CD has $2,064.38.

The club meeting report was submitted to the local papers by the club reporter, Morgan Copeland.

Nick Freeland and Walker Cameron went to the National Shooting Sports Championships in Grand Island, Nebraska. Nick competed in Air Rifle and Walker competed in .22 Rifle.

Cindy Buckardt presented the Cloverbud report. In June, they went on a field trip to Twin Silo Park. At the next meeting on July 18 at 6:30 p.m., Cloverbuds should bring hammers to the meeting to work on a project for county fair.

Leader’s Report: 

Dress Code – Reminder that the 4-H dress code is in effect anytime members are at 4-H events or at the county fair. The full 4-H dress code is here: https://co4h.colostate.edu/resources/ColoradoDressCode.pdf.

Shooting Sports – Ribbons for county shoots were passed out. There will be an email sent out containing the information about the fees for state shoots and state shoot shirts.

Livestock – Poultry will not be shown at the fair, but members still need to complete their record book to complete the project.

Fair Entry – Cindy read names of members who were NOT entered in the fair. They were asked to see her for help after the meeting.

Old Business:

Fair Parade – The theme is “Cowboy Boots and Country Roots.” Karley Rivera from the club’s float committee spoke about the plans for decorating the float with clovers and boots. We will meet to decorate the float on Friday, July 29 at 6:00 p.m. There will be pizza. The parade is at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 30. Members should meet at Fairgrounds Park at 9:00 to board the float. Please wear cowboy boots if you have them. We discussed what to hand out during the parade. Suggestions were candy, pennies, plant seeds. Levi Shrout moved to hand out candy. Seconded and APPROVED.

Discounted Rodeo Tickets and Carnival Wristbands – 4-H Night at the rodeo is on August 8. If you go to 4-H night, please wear your 4-H shirts. The order form is available now and is posted on the website. The due date is July 26. You can pick up your tickets on August 2, 2022 while you are doing your interviews.

New Business:

FAFLC Fireworks Stand – Thank you to those who volunteered to work at the fireworks stand.

Dairy Bar – The Junior Leadership Club is asking for clubs to volunteer at the dairy bar. We discussed the preferred times for our club to take shifts. There will be a SIgnUpGenius posted.

Record Books – All record books must be signed by the Club Leader: Cindy Buckardt. She will be available to review and sign on July 29 when we decorate the float. Record books must be complete before she’ll give them her signature.

September Meeting – Our next club meeting will be a potluck at Fairgrounds Park on Monday, September 12 at 6:00 p.m.

June 2022 Meeting Minutes

The High Country Handiworkers meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m. on June 13, 2022 by President Josh Ryan at the McKee Building at The Ranch.

The pledges were led by Salem DeLeau, Levi Shrout, and Liberty and Liza Bradbury.

Gideon Rivera moved to approve the secretary’s report from May as posted on the club website. The motion was seconded and APPROVED.

Avery Kemper and Victoria Freeland led the sunshine report for the June birthdays. We signed a sympathy card for a 4-H community member’s family. This year’s club members who graduated from high school were recognized: Trinity Dunham, Kassie Lines, Doug Porter, and Haley Erickson. Our club has two members who are competing at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships in Grand Island, Nebraska at the end of June: Walker Cameron for .22 Rifle and Nick Freeland for Air Rifle.

Cindy Buckardt presented the Cloverbud report. In May, the Cloverbuds planted seeds and played gardening Bingo.

Leader’s Report: 

Dress Code – There is a dress code for 4-H and you will get sent home if you do not abide by it. Shorts must be at least mid-thigh. Shooting Sports – Hunter education class will be on June 25 and June 26. There are a few spots open. The online course is required to be completed before attending the in-person.

Photography – The next meeting is on Wednesday, June 22nd at 6:00 p.m.

Old Business:

Fair Parade – The theme is “Country Roots and Cowboy Boots.” The committee working on the float design will meet right after the club meeting. The club will create the float on Friday, July 29 for the parade on July 30.

Club Shirts – Our shirt order will be delivered next week.

New Business:

County Fair – Online Fair Entry and scheduling for interview judging will be available soon. There will be a Fair Entry In-Person Assistance event on June 29 from 4:00–8:00 p.m. to help members with the process.

Shooting Sports County Shoots – County shoot registrations will be on SignUpGenius. Watch for an email with the link for each discipline.

Discounted Rodeo Tickets and Carnival Wristbands – 4-H Night at the rodeo is on August 8. Our club places one order for tickets so we can sit together as a club. An email will be sent out with an order for the discounted rodeo tickets as well as discounted wristbands for the carnival for one day or the whole week.

May 2022 Meeting Minutes

The High Country Handiworkers meeting was called to order at 7:09 p.m. on May 9, 2022 by President Josh Ryan at the McKee Building at The Ranch.

The pledges were led by Abigail, Chloe, Grace, Hannah, and Jethro Jones, as well as Terrin Cook, and Emmitt Closz.

Roll call was taken by club leader Cindy Buckardt and secretary Eden Copeland. This month’s question was “What is your favorite animal?”

Gideon Rivera moved to approve the secretary’s report from April as posted on the club website. The motion was seconded and APPROVED.

Lacey Adams, the Cloverbud leader, presented the Cloverbud report. In April, the Cloverbuds visited SCHEELS and had a scavenger hunt.

Leader’s Report: 

Shooting Sports – Larimer County is not providing manuals. There is a dress code for 4-H and you will be sent home if you do not abide by it. Shorts must be at least mid-thigh. Shoes must be closed-toed and no tank tops. Practices have started. Make sure you are eligible and check the calendar for upcoming practices. Another hunter education will be held on June 25 and June 26. Start the online classes and watch for email to register.

Club Archery Practices – Archery Practice at the Lon Hagler range start on May 17, 2022.

Beekeeping – The next meeting will be on May 15th at 3:30 p.m. at Jenelle Kemper’s house.

Foods – The last meeting will be on the first Monday of June at 6:00 p.m. and will cover record books.

Photography – The next meeting is on Wednesday, May 18th at 6:00 p.m.

For the parliamentary procedure report, we talked about how to make a motion, what goes on after a motion, and the types of votes.

Old Business:

4-H Carnival – As a club we sold 4,981 tickets.

Club Shirts – There is an order form on the club website and the deadline to order is Friday, May 13. The club will cover the cost of shirts for new members, new Cloverbuds, and new leaders, or the cost of a shirt towards a hoodie.

New Business:

Fair Parade – The parade is on July 30th and the theme is “Country Roots and Cowboy Boots.” The float design committee is Erin Jones, Felicia Snyder, Hanna Copeland, Karley Rivera, and Lorinda DeLeau. We will create the floats on July 29th.

Demonstrations:

  • Jaden Bielenburg: Safety materials for metalworking.

Lacey Adams, the Cloverbud leader, presented the Cloverbud report. In March, the Cloverbuds played carnival games and learned how to fill out their own record books.

Leader’s Report: 

Manuals – There is no shooting sports manual this year. The Shooting Sports Leadership team made the decision to not purchase the manuals produced by Ohio State due to some conflicts with what Larimer County Shooting Sports Leaders instruct.

Beekeeping – The next meeting will be on April 20th at 6 p.m. A speaker will be there from the Butterfly Pavilion. Cloverbuds are welcome to attend.

Foods Project – Leader Amy Gebhardt is conducting meetings on the first Mondays of every month at 6:00 pm.

Shooting Sports – Practices have started for some disciplines. Make sure you are eligible and check the calendar for upcoming practices. The In-person Orientation is on April 16. The Zoom meeting was required first.

Cake Decorating – Watch for emails about the Cake Decorating Contest.

There was no parliamentary procedure report, but if you see that Cindy ever has the wrong date on the agendas, please tell her.

Club T-shirts – There will be an order form on our website. The club will cover the cost of shirts for new members, new Cloverbuds, and new leaders, or the cost of a shirt towards a hoodie.

Lon Hagler Archery Range – There is a cleanup day on May 7.

All of the club members present at the meeting did a getting-to-know-everyone worksheet. Members talked and learned about fellow club members.

  • Tigran Sargsyan: What to bring to the fair for a pig,
  • Josh Ryan: Parts of a carburetor,
  • Paisley Dennis: Making a backer for air rifle,
  • Ari Sargsyan: Blocking a knitted garment. (Ari’s demonstration was through video, and can be found on the Members page on hch4h.org.

March 2022 Meeting Minutes

The High Country Handiworkers meeting was called to order at 7:07 p.m. on March 14, 2022 by President Josh Ryan at the McKee Building at The Ranch.

The pledges were led by Hannah Jones, Keegan Lusczakoski, Emmit Closz, Alexis Hickey, and Charlie Gilmore.

Roll call was taken by club leader Cindy Buckardt due to secretary Eden Copeland absence. This month’s question was “What projects are you enrolled in?”

Gideon Rivera moved to approve the secretary’s report from February as posted on the club website but there was no second. Trinity Dunham moved to change “same as last year” to “same as 2020” under the 4-H Carnival. The motion was seconded and APPROVED with the change.

Treasurer Trinity Dunham presented the treasurer report. In the checking account, we have $4,073.32, in the savings account we have $5,588.24, and the CD has $2,064.13. Trinity explained the increase in the checking account from last month was due to the carnival ticket sales.

Club reporter Morgan Copeland was absent but the reports were submitted to the local papers.

Avery Kemper led the sunshine report for the March birthdays.

Avery Kemper, the junior leader, presented the Cloverbud report. In February, they made fish with paper plates, read a story, and ate snacks.

Leader’s Report: 

Beekeeping Project – The next meeting will be on April 20 at 6:00 p.m. A speaker will be there from the Butterfly Pavilion. Cloverbuds are welcome to come.

Enrollment – Enrollment closes on March 15. Get fees paid and finalize enrollment now.

Foods Project – Leader Amy Gebhardt is leading the meeting on the first Monday of every month at 6:00 p.m. At the last meeting they brought Irish food to share: corned beef and cabbage, potato candy, and soda bread.

Sportfishing – There was an ice fishing trip on Saturday, February 19 at Dowdy Reservoir in Red Feather. Logan Dunham caught the first fish.

Shooting Sports – Practices have started for some disciplines. The Annual Safety Meeting on Zoom is on March 23 or April 6 and the In-Person Orientation is on April 16.

Photography – The next meeting is on March 31 at 6:00 p.m.

4-H Carnival Baskets – Our baskets for the 4-H Carnival brought in the following winning bids:

  • Colorado/Sports in wagon = $175
  • Hunting/Camping in wagon = $390
  • Sweets Basket = $130
  • Colorado Rockies firebox made by Dawson Leypoldt = $125
  • Metal Flag made by Nate Rogers = $190                                                                                                      

4-H Carnival Volunteers – We need volunteers to haul supplies for the booths from Berthoud to the Ranch on Friday night and get things set up. We’ll also need help to haul everything back to Berthoud at the end of the carnival.

4-H Carnival Booth Ticket Prices – There was a discussion about whether our ticket prices were too high, low, or perfect. Some members thought they were too low, but others don’t want to make them too high so that families can’t come to the carnival.

4-H Carnival Prizes – We ran out of prizes so bring prizes to donate next year. Maybe we should do different and smaller prizes for the lollipop pull.

Thank you to Suzanne Leypoldt for keeping things running for our booths all day!

Parade Theme – The parade board is asking for parade theme ideas. If you have one, send the idea to Cindy and it will get submitted. Winners get the float entry fee paid for. It has not been voted for yet.

February 2022 Meeting Minutes

The High Country Handiworkers meeting was called to order at 7:06 p.m. on February 14, 2022 by President Josh Ryan at the McKee Building at The Ranch.

The pledges were led by Liam Babcock, Judah Smith, Avery Kemper, Kathryn Cox, Cora Cox, Tigran Sargsyan, Cooper Hastings, Sky Ruehlen, and Terrin Cook.

Roll call was taken by club leader Cindy Buckardt due to secretary Eden Copeland absence. This month’s question was “Have you started your project yet?”

Cora Cox moved to approve the secretary’s report from January as posted on the club website. The motion was seconded and APPROVED.

Club reporter Morgan Copeland was absent but the reports were submitted to the local papers.

Carter Lambert, the junior leader, presented the Cloverbud report. In January, they learned about 4-H projects,  played Bingo, and made ants for Entomology.

The remainder of the ribbons, certificates, and pins from 2021 were awarded.

Leader’s Report: 

Beekeeping Project – The next meeting will be on February 23 at 6:00 p.m. on Zoom.

Enrollment – Enroll soon so you can get started on your projects. Cindy has a list of families who haven’t completed the process. Financial assistance is available if needed.

Hunter Education – Our course is now full. It is not required for practices but you need it for state shoot. Look at other available courses.

Foods Project – Leader Amy Gebhardt is leading the meetings on the first Monday of every month at 6:00 p.m. Bring Irish food to share at the next meeting.

Sportfishing – The ice fishing trip is planned for Saturday, February 19 at Dowdy Reservoir in Red Feather. The event is full.

Shooting Sports – Practices have started for some disciplines. .22 Rifle and .22 Pistol have a revised date and location.

Photography – The next meeting is on March 31. A winter scavenger hunt was emailed and there is a prize.

Beekeeping – The next meeting will be on April 20 at 6:00 p.m. at The Ranch

In the parliamentary procedure report, we learned that parliamentary procedure is for our members. It makes our meetings flow smoothly, and it’s useful in school and meetings when members become adults.

4-H Carnival Ticket Sales at King Soopers – Member sold 424 tickets and received many donations to 4-H.

4-H Carnival Volunteers – We need volunteers to haul supplies for the booths from Berthoud to the Ranch on Friday night and get things set up. We’ll also need help to haul everything back to Berthoud at the end of the carnival.

4-H Carnival Booth Ticket Prices – There was a discussion about the number of tickets to charge for each booth. Avery Kemper moved to change the price of the Iron Man to 4 tickets. Seconded and APPROVED. Hailey McNear moved to keep the rest of the booth prices the same as last year 2020 (corrected via motion at March meeting). Seconded and APPROVED.

4-H Carnival Sign up – There is a SignUpGenius on the website to volunteer for shifts. We are in need of parents to count tickets and monitor prize tables. Parents, please contact Cindy to volunteer.

New Business:

Parade Theme – The fair board is asking for parade theme ideas. If you have a suggestion, send the idea to Cindy and she will submit them on behalf of our club. The winner will receive free entry into the parade.

Club Anniversary – How old is our club? It’s our club’s anniversary and Cindy had a stuffed tiger as a prize for the member who guessed the age of our club. Charles Gilmore won with a guess of 42 years.

  • Dawson Leypoldt: Welding,
  • Hailey McNear: dog health issues.

January 2022 Meeting Minutes

The High Country Handiworkers meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. on January 10, 2022 by Vice President Nate Rogers at the McKee Building at The Ranch.

The pledges were led by Liam Babcock, Judah Smith, Bodhi Jessen, Carter Lambert, and Terran Cook.

Roll call was taken by club leader Cindy Buckardt because Eden Copeland was absent. This month’s question was “What projects are you taking?”

Walker Cameron moved to approve the secretary’s report from December as posted on the club website. The motion was seconded and APPROVED.

Treasurer Trinity Dunham was absent so former treasurer Clara Coats presented the treasurer report. In the checking account we have $350.51, in the savings account we have $5,586.24 and the CD has $2,063.87.

Morgan Copeland was absent and we did not have a reporter’s report.

Cindy led the sunshine report in Kinzie Copeland and Victoria Freeland’s absence. There was one member present with a January birthday.

Carter Lambert, junior leader, presented the Cloverbud report. In December they played BINGO and made Santas.

The remainder of the ribbons, certificates, and pins from 2021 were awarded.

Leader’s Report: 

Foods Project – Leader Amy Gebhardt is holding the meeting on the first Monday of every month at 6:00 p.m.. Bring food for the potluck at the next meeting.

Leadership Development Conference – The leadership conference will be from January 29–31.

Gingerbread Decorating Contest – We have not seen results from the contest yet.

Enrollment – Enroll soon so you can get started on activities.

Hunter Education – Start the online course and then the conclusion course will be March 26–27.

Shooting Sports Orientations – The annual safety meeting on Zoom is required for all members. The in-person orientation is for new members and any members adding disciplines.

Sportfishing – An ice fishing trip is planned for Saturday, February 19 at Dowdy Lake in Red Feather. The event is full.

Photography – The first meeting is in March, so look for emails. There is a winter scavenger hunt on hch4h.org. Send your photos to Jenelle Kemper.

Beekeeping – The next meeting will be on January 25 at 6:00 p.m. at The Ranch.

There was no parliamentary procedure report. Cindy explained the book and the point of learning about parliamentary procedure.

Old Business:

4-H Carnival – Walker Cameron and Bailey Schilling explained what the 4-H Foundation does in the county. The money raised at this 63rd carnival goes to the Foundation to fund 4-H programs. The goal is to raise $50,000 this year. Tickets were distributed. Members must sell 25 or more to be in good standing for future scholarships and funding. The tickets are $1 each. The club that sells the most on average receives $100.

4-H Carnival Auction – Our club will have three baskets to auction at the 4-H Carnival in March. Members should bring items to fit one of the themes: Hunting/Outdoor Skills, Colorado/Sports, and Sweets. Please bring items to the next meeting. The club gets 50% of the money and the Foundation gets 50%.

New Business:

Carnival Booths – We voted to choose the club’s carnival booths. The four booths we are doing are rubberband guns, toilet paper toss, iron man, and lollipop pull.

Carnival Food – There will be no concessions this year so bring your own lunch. Some clubs will have booths selling carnival food as well.

Carnival Volunteers – The SignUpGenius is on the Signups page on hch4h.org for members to choose a timeslot to work. We also need a few parent volunteers to spend the day coordinating booths, workers, and prizes.
