Sheep and Goat Camp / June 7–8, 2023

From Bailey Schilling:

Sheep and Goat Camp will be hosted on June 7 and 8. This year we are happy to welcome Derrick Brown as the clinician. Derrick is currently an FFA instructor in Texas. Derrick has worked very closely with several successful breeders in the sheep and goat industry and raised some of his own. Derrick has also accumulated a successful judging resume with shows at the State and National level. Derrick has been a speaker at ShowRite clinics hosted by Glen Martin. We are excited to welcome Derrick and he’s excited to share his knowledge with you.

If you are interested in attending this event, please fill out a registration form and deliver it to the extension office or email it to Bailey Schilling. Registration will be completed when it is coupled with a payment. We have a few spots left, so please register as soon as possible.

Sheep and Goat Workshop Update

From Bailey Schilling:

I’m excited to start workshops again this year that can be hands-on with our animals. We will have a short review period during which we will reiterate lessons from the previous two lectures we have hosted this past month. I will have a handout including feeding tips for both goats and lambs.

For the second part of this workshop, we will allow those who have brought animals to bring them out to be worked with. Animals must stay in the trailers while we talk about information.

I do want to caution everyone about the change in location for the workshop. We will be in the Longhorn Arena just east of the Pavilions. This is outside so I do want to caution everyone that there may be a chance for late afternoon storms. Please dress appropriately for this event. Closed-toe shoes must be worn by all participants. Animals will be monitored for illnesses and parasites during all workshops and will be subject to dismissal if it is appropriate.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Bailey or any of the sheep and goat key leaders.

Visual Arts / May Meeting

At the May meeting, Bethany will be leading us in Fiber Arts!

Reminders:

1. Bring dinner if you’re hungry!

2. If you are finished with borrowed sculpting tools, please return them to Brett.

3. You’re encouraged to bring any art projects you’re working on (or pictures of them) if you’d like feedback or want to ask questions about techniques, requirements, record books, etc.

4. For those that would like to give a demonstration to a smaller group, we should have time for a few during our meeting. If you can let me know ahead of time, that is appreciated, but not required 🙂

Plan:

Bethany has offered to lead a small project that members can work on during the meeting (bracelet or bookmark, etc).

In order to bring enough supplies, a rough headcount is appreciated—please let us know if you’re planning to come!

She can also answer questions about weaving projects.

*For those interested in purchasing a loom, Bethany recommends the Harrisville Lap Loom or a similar simple frame loom, at least 12″ x 16″.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!
