Poultry Workshop on January 24

The first Poultry Workshop will be Tuesday, January 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Loveland Room at the McKee Building at The Ranch.

Please plan to come and hear the latest update on Avian Influenza (HPAI). It is still a concern so please continue to follow biosecurity practices. We will also be discussing a variety of other topics.

When ordering your market birds make sure not to order more birds than your family can use or sell.

Beekeeping Workshop on January 23, 2023

Have you heard the buzz? You won’t want to miss out on the first Beekeeping Workshop of the year on Monday, January 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Timnath Room at the McKee Building at The Ranch.

Our project leader, Jenelle Kemper, will cover:

  • Activities planned for the year (including field trips)
  • Important project information
  • What to expect this year
  • How to order bees if you’re planning to raise a hive

Beginning Beekeeping Class Offered by NCBA

The Northern Colorado Beekeeping Association is hosting its yearly “Beginning Beekeeping Class” again this year. Members in Beekeeping are invited to join the class. This is NOT a requirement for the 4-H project, but it’s an option for those who are interested in more learning opportunities.

Registration closes on Thursday, January 12!

Beginning Beekeeper Class

When: Saturdays: January 21, January 28, February 4 from 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. (Please arrive on time so we can start promptly.

Where: Lee Martinez Farm in Fort Collins (directions).  Or via Zoom. (The Zoom link will be provided after registration closes. Classes WILL NOT be recorded for viewing later.)

Registration Cost: $150 (Price includes class registration fee, plus membership fees to NCBA and CSBA.)

Registration Deadline: Thursday, January 12, 2023.

Includes:

  • 3 consecutive Saturday classes. 
  • All three classes should be attended to receive the full benefit of your beginning beekeeping education.
  • Each Saturday class will include 3–4 hours of detailed instruction with some time reserved at the end for questions.
  • Enrollment in a bee class group discussion email where questions, ideas, and sharing can be viewed and commented on by your fellow classmates and your instructor.
  • Your instructor may also have some hands-on, in-the-yard experiences coming up during the summer.
  • You will have almost a full year of support from your classmates and your instructor via email.

Scrapbooking Workshop / January 28

Want to learn to scrapbook or to make cards and tags? Come to this scrapbooking workshop and learn how to get started. You will use scrapbooking tools to create a fun tag to take home. We will discuss the scrapbooking project and where to begin.

Everything you need will be supplied for the meeting. Just bring your creativity!

The meeting will be hosted by High Country Handiworkers project leader Barb Hummel at her home, 3339 West County Road 4, Berthoud, CO 80513. If you have any questions, you can email Barb at hummeb@hotmail.com.

We have room for 8 members to attend. Please RSVP by January 24.

Foods Project Meeting / January 2, 2023

Are you enrolling in a Foods project for the 2023 4-H year or considering enrolling in a Foods project? Come check out the Foods project meeting this Monday night, January 2 at 6:00 p.m. at the McKee Building.

Amy Gebhardt is leading the group and on the agenda is the butter-making experiment found in the manual. We will then sample the experiment with bread!

This will be a good opportunity to discuss the units offered in the Foods project and decide which one to enroll in.

Free Sheep Webinar: Hitting the Target for Lamb Yield, Quality, & Value

Anyone who is in the sheep project or interested in the sheep industry is encouraged to attend this free online seminar on January 10 at 6:00 p.m. Dr. Travis Hoffman, the Sheep Extension Specialist for North Dakota State University and the University of Minnesota, will lead a discussion on how to target market lamb carcasses to increase profit margins. Dr. Hoffman is a well-known judge who has been a part of the show industry for many years and also spends an extensive amount of time working with producers in the commercial industry.

Carcass Seminar and Awards Night / October 19, 2022

Livestock members are invited to the Carcass Seminar and Awards Night next Wednesday, October 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the Animal Sciences Building on the CSU campus. The address of the Animal Sciences building is 350 West Pitkin Street, Fort Collins, CO 80521. Please enter the building through the Southwest entrance that overlooks the Monfort Quad. The seminar will take place in room 161. Parking is free in the Animal Sciences parking lot or in the General Service parking lot just east of Animal Sciences.
