Cake Decorating Demonstration at the Larimer County Fair

Kassidy Lines has been a 4-H member for 10 years and has completed several different cake decorating units. She is a Cake Decorating Champion and has been at both the county and state levels.

Kassidy loves to bake and display her creativity through decorating cakes. Join her as she shows off her skills and shares tips and tricks to decorate beautiful cakes. She will discuss some of the tools of the trade and what they are used for, the importance of good frosting consistency, and what inspires her ideas.

We are hosting our demonstration night on Friday, June 24 at 6:00 p.m. in the Berthoud Room. We will provide pizza, but please bring your own drink.

If you haven’t presented a demonstration yet, this is a great opportunity to do it in front of a small audience. AND there’s pizza involved.

Demonstration Night / June 11, 2021

Have you presented your demonstration? Every High Country Handiworker club member is required to present a demonstration each year. This requirement can be met by presenting your demonstration at a project meeting or workshop, at a club meeting, or at this scheduled demonstration night.

Presentation Contest Day

We will be holding the Presentation Contest Day on May 1! It will be an in-person event in the McKee 4-H Building at The Ranch. 

This is a great opportunity for you to share what you have learned in your project area or through 4-H in general. The deadline to sign up has been extended to April 23!  So this is your chance to join the fun and gain some experience in public speaking. Choose a category, or a few categories, and give it a try.

Participants will present to a small audience including 1 or 2 judges and a timer who will assist speakers with their time management. Audiences are limited to 2 family members per speaker due to COVID restrictions. Some participants will be eligible to move on to a state contest. Please see the qualifying sheet linked here.

Categories are as follows:

  • Demonstration or Illustrated Talk,
  • Team Demonstration,
  • Prepared and Impromptu Speech,
  • Interpretive Reading, Horse Demonstration,
  • Horse Team Demonstration,
  • Horse Prepared Speech, and
  • Horse Impromptu Speech Contests.

You may enter as an individual or a team, and as many as you would like!  All categories are open to everyone, including Cloverbuds.

Deep Cleaning a Muzzleloader: Demonstration by Kathryn Cox

  • After every few rounds and before a competition you should deep clean your muzzleloader. First you take the muzzleloader apart by taking out the pin and pulling the muzzle off of the stock.
  • Then get a bucket of hot soapy water.
  • Take the nipple out of the muzzle with a nipple wrench. Then put the muzzle in the water and use your rod to push the hot soapy water up and down the barrel with a clean patch.
  • After it is clean, completely dry the muzzle then use bore butter on a clean patch to wipe down all of the metal inside and out. This keeps it from rusting.
  • Then put the muzzleloader back together and you are ready to go.

Cora Cox: Demonstration on Dog Obedience

  • When you are training your dog you always want to carry treats with you so that you can teach what is right and what is wrong.
  • One of the first commands that you should teach your dog is to sit. Make sure your dog keeps eye contact with you so that they don’t get distracted by things around them. Sitting is very important because you use it almost anywhere and it helps you teach your dog other commands and tricks.
  • Stay is another important command that you should teach your dog, because it helps keep them focused on you and not different distractions.
  • Down is also one of the first commands to teach your dog. When you are teaching them to lay down make sure that your dog is in a standing position. NOT sitting. When they are sitting and you tell them to lay down whenever they sit they will immediately lay down. You can get docked a lot of points.
  • Finally teaching your dog to heal is one of the last first commands to teach your dog. When you do this take a treat and hold it at your side. You want your dog’s shoulder to be aligned with your hip. They should follow you and the treat.

Tait Simpson’s Demonstration: Quality and Colors of Alpaca Fleece

  • Main fleece blanket around the body is the prime part of the fleece. Used mainly for yarn.
  • Lower quality fleece from around the legs, neck, and head are used mainly for felt.
  • Natural colors are most valuable. They come in a variety of colors. My herd comes in 5 different colors. Black, chocolate, cinnamon, taupe, and white.
