Fishing Adventure on Friday, May 27, 2022

We have scheduled a fishing outing for Friday, May 27 from 8:00–11:00 a.m. at Buckingham Reservoir on the west side of Loveland. This is a private lake that Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer Clayton Brossart has retained permission to fish, and he will be hosting our trip. He will have bait/lures for crappie fishing. If you wish to fish for bass, bring your own bait/lures. This will be a catch-and-release experience.

The dam of Buckingham Reservoir is on the east side, and parking is on the shoulder of First Street. Leaders and parents are welcome to attend. But remember that anyone 16 and older MUST have a Colorado fishing license. Please RSVP to Cindy if you plan to attend so she has a count of members and parents who will be participating.

What a great way to end the school year and get a kickoff to Sportfishing/Outdoor Skills with a field trip!

Sheep and Goat Workshop / May 23, 2022

With the change in weather coming this weekend I would like to remind everyone of responsible management practices. It is likely that animals can experience some discharge from their nose with this sudden change in temperature and even develop some respiratory issues. Being proactive in this situation, I would recommend members blanket any market animals to help keep them warm in the colder temperatures during the evening and early morning hours. I would also like to remind you of the importance of providing dry bedding underneath your shelter where animals can lay to get out of the wind.

I would also like to invite you to the second workshop for the Sheep/Goat workshop series coming up Monday, May 23, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. in the warm-up arena at the Ranch. We invite you to bring your animals to start with some basic showmanship techniques. We will have additional information that will be covered at the beginning of the workshop so please be prepared for your animals to be tied up for a short duration while we discuss some other material. If your animal is displaying any signs of illness, please avoid bringing them.

If you have any questions please reach out to me or any of the project key leaders.

Beekeeping News for April 13, 2022

Beekeeping is a new project available this year and it has 4-H members buzzing with activity. Members who are starting their own hives this year are busy as bees in preparation. Here we see one member building a hive that’s fit for a queen.

All 4-H members are invited to attend a special presentation on “The History of Beekeeping.” Special guest Lorna McCallister from The Butterfly Pavilion will provide an educational insight into beekeeping. We encourage all 4-H members to attend this learning opportunity on April 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the McKee Building at The Ranch. Registration is required—click here to register.

Colorado 4-H is also hosting a Beekeeping Essay Contest. This contest is open to all 4-H members no need to be in the beekeeping project. The winning essay will receive $100 and will be sent on to the National 4-H Contest for the chance to compete for the $750 winning prize money! Essays are due by April 29. Contest rules and details are available here.

Poultry Update from Colorado Department of Agriculture

CDA has issued an emergency rule, effective immediately, to temporarily suspend all Colorado poultry events including all poultry shows, meets, sales, swaps, and competitions. This rule is in effect for 90 days, unless otherwise modified.

In 2022, avian influenza has been detected in wild bird species across 29 states impacting more than 15 million poultry and birds.

At this time, there have been no detections of HPAI in commercial or backyard poultry flocks in Colorado, but avian influenza is a highly contagious and fatal animal disease that can be transferred from wild bird populations to domestic poultry. The State Veterinarian’s Office will hold an informational webinar on Wednesday, April 6, from 5–7 p.m. and is taking questions until then. Find this form and registration at ag.colorado.gov/hpai.
