Club News for August 31

Congratulations

Congratulations to all of our members who participated in the County Cake Decorating Contest, Shooting Sports Competitions, County Fair, Livestock Sale, and those who went on to the State Competitions, Contests, State Fair, and State Livestock Sale. Wow, did we accomplish a lot this year!

September Potluck

Our next club meeting is not a meeting, but an end-of-the-year celebration picnic to be held at Fairgrounds Park in Loveland. This is a potluck, so please bring a dish to share. We will start at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 12. The club will provide sloppy joes, paper plates, plasticware, napkins, and coolers of lemonade and water.

Livestock Record Books

All members enrolled in a livestock project, including dog, please bring your completed record books to the potluck on Monday, September 12. I will sign them and turn them in at the extension office. If you were enrolled in a livestock project but did not show at the county fair, you still MUST complete your record books and turn them in. If you are unable to attend the picnic then I MUST receive them by September 15 at my office at Construction Supply House in Berthoud.

Open House

If you know anyone who is interested in learning more about 4-H, encourage them to attend the Larimer County 4-H Open House on Thursday, October 6 at 6:00 p.m. at the McKee Building.

2023 4-H Year

Start thinking about next year—our first meeting for the upcoming year is October 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the McKee Building and enrollment will open on October 16.

I am very proud of all of our members and how well they showed at all the contests, competitions, and at fair. GREAT JOB!

Club News for July 7

Our last official club meeting for the 2021–2022 year is this Monday, July 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the McKee Building. If you have not yet completed your demonstration, go to the Signups page on hch4h.org to grab a slot.

I received a report of those entered in the county fair as of Wednesday evening. If you are not sure if you entered or did so correctly, contact me and I will check my list. Remember, fair entry is due by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, July 8.

Cloverbuds will be meeting on Monday, July 18 at 6:30 p.m. to work on fair projects. Cloverbuds do NOT need to enter through Fair Entry. Simply come to the fair on the morning of August 2 and bring your project to check-in. Cloverbuds: please bring a hammer to the meeting. We are going to build! If Cloverbuds have an older sibling who would like to come and help their younger sibling with their project, this would be great and would also count as leadership for the older member’s e-Record.

We will be building/decorating our club’s parade float on July 29 at 6:00 p.m. at Construction Supply House (806 North 2nd Street, Berthoud). Pizza and water will be provided. This is an opportunity to bring your record books for my signature as the Club Leader.

I will be at the club meeting at 6:00 p.m. and stay after if you have record book questions or need a signature. I will not sign a book until it is complete or very close to completion.

Good luck to all of our club members who are participating in county shoots this weekend!

See you on Monday at the club meeting!

Club News for December 8

Happy Holidays!

This Monday, December 13 will be our final club meeting for 2021. What a year full of challenges…I look forward to a great 2022!

At this meeting, we will elect our club officers: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Reporter, Historian, and Sunshine person. Please consider each role and decide if you would like to run. Keep in mind the time commitment and the expectations for fulfilling the position. You can find descriptions and duties for each office at this link. If you plan to run for office, please prepare a brief speech to introduce yourself, your years in 4-H (if any), and why you would like to be elected to the office.

Community service is a 4-H requirement and will be recorded in your e-Record submitted for the county fair. We will be completing one of our club community service projects at this meeting—we will be wrapping Christmas gifts for the Foster and Adoptive Families of Larimer County. No experience is required and we encourage Cloverbuds to attend as it’s great fun. Does it sound like chaos to have 40+ kids wrapping gifts? Well, it is, but it is organized chaos! The wrapping paper, scissors, and tape will be provided.

We also like to share cookies when we’re done wrapping. Please bring a dozen to share. No drinks are provided, so bring a water bottle or there is a drinking fountain available.

Don’t forget to bring an item to donate for our club baskets for the 4-H Carnival to be held on March 5.  Our basket themes are Hunting/Outdoor Skills, Colorado/Sports, and Sweets. You are welcome to bring items to the January meeting as well.

A few reminders: Please read the November club meeting minutes as posted on the club website prior to the meeting. If you are planning to present a demonstration, please sign up on the club website under the Signups page.

If you have not yet enrolled, please do so soon.

See you on Monday!

The High Country Handiworkers Club meeting for December will be held on Monday, December 13 at 7:00 p.m.

Club Meeting on Monday, October 11

We would like to welcome any new or prospective new members as well as those returning to the High Country Handiworkers 4-H Club. Our first meeting for the 2021–2022 year is coming up on Monday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m. at the McKee Building at The Ranch (5280 Arena Circle, Loveland). Please bring your enthusiasm as we start a great year!

We will be discussing upcoming community service projects, voting on our budget for the coming year, getting feedback about the county fair and state competitions, talking about enrollment, highlighting shooting sports dates and the need for leaders in the program…and I’m sure there is more.

Kansas 4-H Entomology Member Makes Discovery of Invasive Species

A spotted lanternfly, shown at a Pennsylvania vineyard, appeared in a boy’s bug collection at the Kansas State Fair. The invasive insect, not previously known to be in Kansas, can damage trees and crops. (Matt Rourke/AP)

A 4-H member in northwestern Kansas discovered an invasive species as part of his entomology project.

“It’s the excitement of a kid learning about their world, putting it on display, and sure enough, they discovered something that adults were like, ‘Wow, this is really important for us to be aware of. He has alerted us to a threat we weren’t aware of, and we’re really thankful.”

Notes from the May Club Meeting

Project Manuals

Project manuals are in and available to pick up from Cindy.

Meat Quality Assurance (MQA)

Meat Quality Assurance (MQA) is this Friday, May 14 between 2:00–7:00 p.m.

First-time livestock members in any market and/or breeding livestock projects must attend a Colorado 4-H Meat Quality Assurance (MQA) program. And members are required to attend a Colorado 4-H MQA program a minimum of twice during the course of their 4-H career, once as a junior and once again within one year after becoming a senior 4-H member.

Fair Parade

The fair parade will be on Saturday, July 31 and the theme is “Better Together.” The club voted to have a float, and we’ll plan to build the float in the evening on Friday, July 30.

Congratulations to Club Members

These club members sold the most tickets in the county for the 4-H Carnival drawing:
1st: Lexi Grundy
2nd: Liam Babcock
4th: Dawson Leypoldt
5th: Tie—Walker Cameron and Willow Cameron

Also, Lexi Grundy won the “Horse Demonstration or Illustrated Talk” for Intermediates.
