Club News for August 31

Congratulations

Congratulations to all of our members who participated in the County Cake Decorating Contest, Shooting Sports Competitions, County Fair, Livestock Sale, and those who went on to the State Competitions, Contests, State Fair, and State Livestock Sale. Wow, did we accomplish a lot this year!

September Potluck

Our next club meeting is not a meeting, but an end-of-the-year celebration picnic to be held at Fairgrounds Park in Loveland. This is a potluck, so please bring a dish to share. We will start at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 12. The club will provide sloppy joes, paper plates, plasticware, napkins, and coolers of lemonade and water.

Livestock Record Books

All members enrolled in a livestock project, including dog, please bring your completed record books to the potluck on Monday, September 12. I will sign them and turn them in at the extension office. If you were enrolled in a livestock project but did not show at the county fair, you still MUST complete your record books and turn them in. If you are unable to attend the picnic then I MUST receive them by September 15 at my office at Construction Supply House in Berthoud.

Open House

If you know anyone who is interested in learning more about 4-H, encourage them to attend the Larimer County 4-H Open House on Thursday, October 6 at 6:00 p.m. at the McKee Building.

2023 4-H Year

Start thinking about next year—our first meeting for the upcoming year is October 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the McKee Building and enrollment will open on October 16.

I am very proud of all of our members and how well they showed at all the contests, competitions, and at fair. GREAT JOB!

Junior Livestock Sale Add-ons

UPDATE: The deadline for add-ons has been revised to Monday, August 22.

Did you know you can support our 4-H livestock members even if you didn’t buy an animal at the Junior Livestock Sale? You can contribute any dollar amount to a 4-H member by doing a Livestock Sale Add-on.

Go to the payment portal (https://www.treventscomplex.com/planning-your-event/ranch-event-payment-portal) and then choose Select Service Type “Larimer County Fair Jr Livestock Add-on.” Include your name, the child’s name, species, and a dollar amount. It’s a great way to show your support!

Sheep and Goat Workshop / May 23, 2022

With the change in weather coming this weekend I would like to remind everyone of responsible management practices. It is likely that animals can experience some discharge from their nose with this sudden change in temperature and even develop some respiratory issues. Being proactive in this situation, I would recommend members blanket any market animals to help keep them warm in the colder temperatures during the evening and early morning hours. I would also like to remind you of the importance of providing dry bedding underneath your shelter where animals can lay to get out of the wind.

I would also like to invite you to the second workshop for the Sheep/Goat workshop series coming up Monday, May 23, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. in the warm-up arena at the Ranch. We invite you to bring your animals to start with some basic showmanship techniques. We will have additional information that will be covered at the beginning of the workshop so please be prepared for your animals to be tied up for a short duration while we discuss some other material. If your animal is displaying any signs of illness, please avoid bringing them.

If you have any questions please reach out to me or any of the project key leaders.

Poultry

Poultry members, we are still working with the State Extension Office and communicating with the State Vet to gain a better understanding of this virus and how it is going to impact the shows at the Larimer County Fair. Please refer to the multiple emails sent out earlier this month pertaining to HPAI and preventative steps that should be taken to reduce infection of your flocks. Workshops will still be taking place in the absence of live animals for the poultry program.
